Unique Z Scale Model Trains

Z scale model trains were first introduced by Marklin Company of Germany in 1972. This is the smallest model train ever produced in the world. In the term z scale the term scale is a ratio that deals with the comparison between the Z model train and the trains in the real world in term of size. Here Z scale shows how small it is in compared to the real world trains. Scale also refers to all he accessories associated with a model train of a particular scale. The z scale model trains are operated on the standard gauge track. It is true prototype of the real world rail track. The exact distance between the two tracks of the z scale rail is 6.55 mm.

The specialty of the z scale size is its duality. It has an interesting lay out in very modest space. At the same time it has several scenes ranging between medium to large space. You have every features of HO scale in a very less space in comparison to HO scale. Thus this model has the adaptability to suit your need.

Z scale model trains are available in both American and European prototype. There is misconception that Only Europeans have z scale model trains. Z scale model trains have several features that make its operation smooth. A power pack with out put of 10 volts direct current is used in the z scale model. One more 1300 MRC power pack has also been used in z scales successfully. The size of z scale model trains is not too small as alleged by many. It is almost 70 percent of the size of N scale. To run the z scale model train it is essential to keep the area around the train neat and clean. The stuff like scenery material, hair or fiber may get tangled with train and affect its performance. The track of the model therefore should be regularly cleaned. The cleaning liquid like isopropyl alcohol can be used for cleaning. There is a dual joining system utilized in the z scale. This system is made of replaceable plastic snap connectors. The benefit of this dual system is that it provides track lock and supplies power to the rail. The plastic roadbed used a rail joiners can be easily replaced if in case of damages to it.

The net impression of the z scale model trains can be summarizes in few lines. It is well executed model train system. Its accessories are compatible with the products of other z scale producing companies. Thus you can always match and mix its different components. It is available in just 20 dollars.

How To Succeed When Building Model Railroads

Building model railroads started out as a childs pastime. Parents used to buy their children kits to get them started and left them to it. Children had hours of fun creating their own model railways and were introduced to a whole new world of creativity. They were all the better for it. Today, building model railroads are a lot more complicated than they look because of all of the additional features that you can choose to have

The enthusiast today undertakes building model railroads, whether young or old. Age seems to be no barrier any more as quite a few people well past their twenties enjoy the creative and relaxing pursuit. They love to build scale models of the real thing, which is extremely undervalued in modern life today. Like the children of yesteryear, they also spend hours and hours building model railways for pleasure but often add numerous features to them that the children of yesterday could have never imagined. You have to consider so many aspects of the railroad before you build it. For example, the layout of the railroad itself is of utmost importance. You would not want to create a curve too harsh because an electric model train would just fly straight off it and potentially become damaged. You would also need to know in advance whether or not you could actually build a multiple track model and would need the parts to make it work, such as turntables. However, it is only when you have extensively planned this all out that you can begin to contemplate building model railroads.

Beginners as well as experts can attempt building model railroads but you have to cater for your own abilities and needs. For example, it is unlikely that a beginner will actually be able to build an effective multiple track model on his or her first attempt. You would need to think about this and maybe build a one track model before adding the rest of your planned tracks to your completed work. If you plan to have electric model trains then you would need to incorporate some sort of power source whilst building model railroads. All of these factors would also play a part in the layout, but if you do not know something then ask someone who does. Many experts on the Internet would have answers for you and would be willing to give you plenty of hints and tips.

Building model railways is something to be proud of. Not only can you build something amazingly complicated from scratch, but also you would no doubt have learned to be very flexible with your designs in the process. All of the skills that you learn first time round can be incorporated into future designs and can help you to help others building model railroads for the very first time!

An Orlando Vacation Devotee

As an Orlando vacation devotee, I can recommend all of the theme parks, but did you know the area is brimming with other excellent visitor attractions without a roller coaster in sight. Orlando also has markets, shows, art galleries, exhibitions, beautiful lakes and parks, all easily available for the visitor who wants something a little different. The city has been attracting tourists for a long time and justifiably so as it has just about everything the visitor could want.

If you enjoy shopping then you will love Orlando; it has plenty of malls and stores like Outdoor World which is so large it contains a 17,000 gallon aquarium and you could spend all day there. An Orlando vacation has far more to offer than this short article can possibly hope to highlight so only a few of the more unusual attractions and places to see are brought to your attention.

To start, there is the Central Florida Zoo which draws huge crowds all year round and has over four hundred animals there although it is was only granted this status in 1975. Privately owned, this zoo is also a botanical garden run by a charitable group whose purpose is to protect native and endangered species around the world.

For anyone that appreciates the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany then a large collection of his works is exhibited the Museum of American Art, where it has been housed since the early 1940's. The famous chapel interior commissioned for the World's Columbian Exhibition back in 1893 is also here along with many items of Tiffany jewelry, leaded glass, ornaments and clayware.

Whilst Orlando may appear on the surface to be a town designed for the entertainment of children that could not be farther from the truth with adults equally well looked after. For people that prefer the night, the list of things to do on an Orlando vacation is almost endless with families, teenagers and adults all well looked after.

Another popular attraction is the Orlando Science Center and is in fact one of the largest buildings of its type allowing the visitor access to ten huge exhibition halls. For lovers of anything relating to trains and trolleys, there is the International Trolley and Train Museum which has fourteen model trains running through the building which actually houses a waterfall.

If you have seen the Titanic-Ship of Dreams film then you will enjoy the exhibition along International Drive that tells the story using large sets and depictions from the ship as a background. Away from all the hustle is the wonderful Lake Eola Park in the heart of downtown; it has beautiful sidewalks in over forty acres where it is possible to spend a few peaceful hours.

No trip to Orlando would be complete without a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort which comprises of four main theme parks plus water parks; or Universal Studios resort complex which is equally as popular. An Orlando vacation has enough tourist attractions to last a year so the next time you visit, why not try one or two of the others; they may be less well known but can be just as impressive.

The Brown Navy And Its Roll In The Vietnam War

The concept of riverine forces was not new to Southeast Asia. During the Indochina War of 1946-54, French forces created the Dinassauts, which were combat organizations designed to operate in the hostile environment of Vietnam's waterways. These employed a variety of modified landing craft in the fire support and stop and search roles. When the first South Vietnamese Naval units were established in 1955, their River Assault Groups (RAGs) took over the equipment. By 1964, the RAGs possessed over 200 craft.

Prior to 1965, operations against the VC in the Mekong Delta were the responsibility of the South Vietnamese forces. However, from December 1965 onwards they transferred to the U.S. Navy's River Patrol Force (Task Force 116). One of the earliest operations mounted by the RPF was Game Warden, which deployed river patrol boats and experimental hovercraft to prevent the VC use of the waterways. It was run parallel to Operation Market Time, which began in March 1965 by Task Force 71 (later 115), and was designed to cut off NVA seaborne infiltration. By mid-1966 it had become clear that more had to be done to challenge VC control of the delta and the coastal mangrove swamps of the Rung Sat Special Zone, southeast of Saigon.

Between August 1966 and November 1967, 17 million cubic tons of silt were dredged in order to create a base on the My Tho river for a new Mekong Delta Mobil Afloat Force (MDMAF). Along with the base, two self-propelled barracks ships (APDs) where added to the area to provide floating base facilities and accommodations for the grunts when they cam back from an operation. Each ship was usually moored no more than 30 miles from the zone of operations, and had berths for 800 men, with space for a further 600 at a tight squeeze.

American attempts to control VC infiltration in the delta, saw the largest expansions to date of riverine forces when, in June of 1967, the Mobile Riverine Force became operational. Reviving a strategy used during the American Civil War, when Union Army forces operated Navy gunboats on the Ohio, Mississippi and other inland water-ways, US Army troops were given special training, including combat operations in the Rung Sat Special Zone and at the Coronado Navel Base in San Diego, California. The MRF comprised a navel component (Task Force 117) harnessed to the 2d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division. This included the 3d and 4th Battalions, 47th Infantry; the 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, and the 105mm howitzers of the 3d Battalion, 39th Artillery. The task force was often combined with units drawn form the South Vietnamese Marine Corps.

The MRF were given with an array of landing craft and spawned a new type of weaponry made for taking on the VC in the Mekong. The MRF were provided with Armored Troop Carriers (ATCs) with steel slats to take the beef out of recoilless-rifle rounds; Monitors and Command Control Boats (CCBs) for co-coordinating assaults; not forgetting the trusty Swifts and River Patrol Boats (PRBs). Add helicopter pads to some of the craft, and equip each and every one with a factory of weapons ranging from the 0.5in machine gun to the 40mm cannon and 81mm mortar, and you have one heck of a Brown Navy on your hands.

The arrival of the Assault Support Patrol Boats (ASPB) added still more firepower to the MRF's inventory, and provided a razor sharp cutting edge during the ambushes, patrols, reconnaissance and escort missions. Then there was the Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV), known as the shark-mouthed raider and using the call-sign "Monster," these hovercraft could race across rice paddies and shallow swamps that were off-limits to other riverine craft. Complete with a heavy-duty battalion of 105mm howitzers based on mobile barges, the MRF worked the waters of the delta.

The operations usually followed the same pattern. The heavily armed ASPBs would take on the role of point as the column of boats cruised through the water, with minesweepers on both flanks. Next came the river assault squadron's naval commander in his CCB. A Monitor was usually the next boat in line, ready to unleash sustained firepower into the bushes on the river banks if any incoming was received. Then came a force of three ATC's carrying the battalion's first company.

The Coronado operations (I to XI) from June 1967 onwards, concentrated on Long An and Dinh Tuong Provinces in the Mekong, with special attention to the Rung Sat Special Zone. Initially, the VC attempt to stand and fight against the MRF hammer and anvil tactics, but the sheer scale of the MRF operations accounted for over 1000 VC during the last six months of 1967. By the end of 1968, the objectives of Market Time, Game Warden and MRF along the coast and in the Mekong Delta had largely been achieved. However, now there was a new problem. Thwarted in the delta, the VC began to exploit a new infiltration route - across the Cambodian border. To counter this, Market Time, Game Warden and MRF units were welded into a combined force under the codename 'Sealords.'

Front Yard, Grave Yard

Halloween decorating can be a lot of fun for both the creator and the neighborhood. There are a lot of options for those who like to decorate their yard for this be-a-kid day, uh, night. Many different people either go all out or simply hang a paper skeleton on their front window. For those that go all out, the neighbor kids will gravitate to your place, so there will not be a shortage of ghosts, goblins and ghouls stopping by on October 31st.

One extremely fun type of decor is to make your front-yard into a grave yard. One can go completely elaborate with lighting, sound, lots of head-stones and even a mausoleum. However, you can start simple and do lots of grave-stones with very little effort and creativity. Head stones, grave stones and grave markers have been around since the dawn of time and have always been markers for the buried. They also can form the creep affect which is paramount on Halloween. If youre semi-creative or very creative you can have lots of fun making head stones.

To start, head over to your favorite lumber yard or home improvement center. Locate the insulation isle and find the pink or blue sheets of foam insulation. Your best bet is to use either the 1 1/2 or 2 inch sheets. Either size will work and color is irrelevant as youll be painting over them anyway.

Once you have your trusty sheet of foam home and in the garage, youll need to find some stencils and/or pictures by perusing the web or just about any source where graves are displayed. There are tons of head-stone and grave yard sites that can tickle your idea and imagination bone. If you dont have a reference, your town probably has a cemetery near by. A digital camera and a nicely lit day work just as well. Of course, the other more creative approach, a favorite, is to completely make up the shapes from memory. Everyone has been to a grave yard at one time or another, so there are plenty of references. Each sheet should yield about 6 to 8 head stones which is usually plenty to get started.

Cutting extruded styrofoam can be very easy and while there are several ways to perform the cutting, a large kitchen knife usually reserved for that large watermelon during the summer will work just fine. Knives tend to leave rough edges and thats fine for when you want that very old look which is common in grave yards. Other cutting tools that can be used are special styrofoam electric cutters that you can find on the web as well as there are several sites that offer a How-To on making your own cutter with a soldering iron and some heavy copper wire.

Now that youve cut out your head stone shape, youll want to put some kind of writing, eulogy or some kind of markings. Here a wood burning tool works good, a sharp utility knife or a set of those craft knives with a variety of blades. For lettering you can either use some kind of stencil set and or print something from your favorite word processor. Either way, you can either go authentic or funny. Draw an outline of the wording, drawing or date onto the front of the head-stone and cut out the lettering causing an embossing affect. If you have a wood burner and are familiar with its use, you can simply melt out the letters. Embossing the wording, lettering or date give it a 3-D affect and an authentic look. Plus, at night, it adds a creepy affect if lighting is involved. For added interest, use a friend or neighbors name to add that extra touch. However, make sure theyre a good friend and not someone you really want to see buried. That could lead to a whole other set of problems.

After all of the prep work is done by cutting your shape, adding your wording or markings, youll need to prepare it for presentation. With any type of sandpaper, clean the entire surface and make sure the cut edges are void of any extra pieces hanging where your knife did the cut. Now that its clean and ready, you should use a latex paint to prime or cover the entire surface. Latex paint creates both a barrier and surface for the final coloring. Use a light or white latex that can be found on the Oops shelf at just about any home improvement center.

Let the prime paint dry before going onto the final coat. Once dry, you now have several fine finish choices to wrap up the project. One technique is to spray water on the primed surface and lightly spray a black or gray paint letting it drip down through the cracks and surface of the head-stone. You can also dry brush getting the same affect by taking a light gray or darker colored paint and lightly applying it on the corners, in the engraved writing or in cracks. Taking a dry paint brush, lightly swipe in a downward fashion the dark paint until it creates streaks on the lighter surface.

For added affects, you can also add moss found in any hobby shop or where ever dried flowers or model trains are sold. This takes a lot more patience and simply painting should do the trick. For that perfectionist, cracks, additional coloring and the moss affect can really take it to the next level.

Once your first one is done, repeat until you have enough to make your own yard of head-stones. Putting a grave yard in your own front yard for Halloween can be both fun and rewarding if you anticipate lots of trick-er-treaters. Typically, the kids love the added affect and will definitely stop by your house to relieve you of the enormous amount of candy you have at the ready.
