How To Succeed When Building Model Railroads

Building model railroads started out as a childs pastime. Parents used to buy their children kits to get them started and left them to it. Children had hours of fun creating their own model railways and were introduced to a whole new world of creativity. They were all the better for it. Today, building model railroads are a lot more complicated than they look because of all of the additional features that you can choose to have

The enthusiast today undertakes building model railroads, whether young or old. Age seems to be no barrier any more as quite a few people well past their twenties enjoy the creative and relaxing pursuit. They love to build scale models of the real thing, which is extremely undervalued in modern life today. Like the children of yesteryear, they also spend hours and hours building model railways for pleasure but often add numerous features to them that the children of yesterday could have never imagined. You have to consider so many aspects of the railroad before you build it. For example, the layout of the railroad itself is of utmost importance. You would not want to create a curve too harsh because an electric model train would just fly straight off it and potentially become damaged. You would also need to know in advance whether or not you could actually build a multiple track model and would need the parts to make it work, such as turntables. However, it is only when you have extensively planned this all out that you can begin to contemplate building model railroads.

Beginners as well as experts can attempt building model railroads but you have to cater for your own abilities and needs. For example, it is unlikely that a beginner will actually be able to build an effective multiple track model on his or her first attempt. You would need to think about this and maybe build a one track model before adding the rest of your planned tracks to your completed work. If you plan to have electric model trains then you would need to incorporate some sort of power source whilst building model railroads. All of these factors would also play a part in the layout, but if you do not know something then ask someone who does. Many experts on the Internet would have answers for you and would be willing to give you plenty of hints and tips.

Building model railways is something to be proud of. Not only can you build something amazingly complicated from scratch, but also you would no doubt have learned to be very flexible with your designs in the process. All of the skills that you learn first time round can be incorporated into future designs and can help you to help others building model railroads for the very first time!

Brass Train Books

There are several books that cover the Brass Train and associated brass equipment. Most are of the paperback variety. In this discussion we will review both hardback and paperback brass model train books. There are numerous model train books available however, brass model train books are somewhat limited.

The brass model train books that I am most familiar with will be reviewed in the following tutorial.

Many catalogs of brass trains have been published by Pacific Fast Mail (PFM), Balboa, and others. These catalogs ran for several years with the latest colored pictures of those engines being imported into the United States. This form of advertisement has ceased and the catalogs have become collector items. They are useful in determining what has been manufactured in the past.

In 1976 "Lenahan's Locomotive Lexicon" by James Lenahan was published which covered HO scale brass locomotives. The first addition was published in 1974 in which only 1000 copies were made. This is a limited book on brass locomotives produced up until 1976. It has several brass engines from various collections illustrated in the paperback. All pictures are black & white. This book can help in determining paint schemes for several locomotives.

The third edition of "The Brown Book of Brass Locomotives" was published in 1992 by John Glaab. The 1st and 2nd edition of the Brown Book were published in 1980 & 1982 by R. A. Brown. This is a comprehensive paperback with both black & white pictures and model production with manufacturers listed. It includes the Whyte Wheel Arrangement Classification for all types of steam locomotives. It is an excellent book.

The Art of Brass in Model Railroading: Volume I.
By No Author. After the Second World War Japan emerged both as a market for and, later, as an exporter of brass model trains. Kumata & Company Limited, the subject of this volume, was one of these enterprising manufacturers, with their various model trains numbering over a thousand. This details the rare pieces produced by K.M.T. together with many other outstanding brass rail models. I have not yet seen this book but have it on order. The copyright was in 1982. It is out of print and I had to order it from the United Kingdom as a used book.

An Important American Model Train Collection Including Lionel, Scale Brass and LGB Models, Vintage Posters & Photographs. [Lehmann Gross Bahn. Marklin. Magnus. MTH. Sunnyside. Weawer Models. Key Imports. Winston Link..]. 20/12/2006. This book is also out of print and I had to order it from the United Kingdom. My interest in this book is the discussion on Key Imports and other scale brass models.

The most important book on brass trains is "The Brass Train Guide Book" by Dan Glasure. This book was just released and the copyright is 2007. As stated in the front of the book "The Most Comprehensive Collection of Brass Model Train Data Available". This is a fact. The illustrations of steam and diesel engines are colored with the correct color scheme when painted. There is a section on brass equipment such as passenger cars, freight cars, bridges, towers, etc. No one has ever collected and published such a comprehensive book on brass locomotives. This is an ongoing project. The author is trying to find every type of scale brass locomotive, cars, passenger equipment, structures, bridges, etc. imported into the United States and Canada including the importer and Manufacturer.

Include with the hardbound book is a Price & Data Guide Volume I. This a 520 page paperback of the most complete listing of imported brass models and the associated coverage of the manufacture, number manufactured, importer, description, catalog #, BG-SKU#, railroad/owner, etc. There are a series of notes for each lot in most cases.

In reviewing the hardbound book I have found engines that I did not know had been manufactured. The paint schemes used on various engines and roads is very important for now I can have several of my brass engines painted correctly. This set of books is helping me with our Brass Locomotive Works business.

This hobby is truly an art form because of the intricate craftsmanship that goes into building a brass model.

Joy and Michael Ball have been involved in the restoration and maintaining of a variety of Brass Model Locomotives. Through their years of expertise, Mr. & Mrs. Ball have perfected the art of train restoration often spending countless hours preserving vintage Brass Locomotives to running condition of even the newest Brass Model Replicas. It should be noted that the above article was written by Michael Ball. Receive their free newsletter at http://www.brasslocomotiveworks.com

For Pete Withers

Now, Pete, he is a walking man

He likes to roam and hike

Hes also active in other ways

Including cycling on his bike.

Hes also fond of model trains

Building a railway in his attic

With his HO gauge, hes the stationmaster

Oh yes its very dramatic!

Hes kindness itself, oh yes, is Pete

He will always help anyone out

Friends, family or neighbours

Whoever gives him a shout.

He loves to feed the wild birds

They visit all year round

All colours, shapes and sizes

Petes tended them fondly, youve found.

He also enjoys doing the gardening

And is rather green-fingered, its true

A lovely display, of plants, hell create

Making you feel it was done just for you

He likes to sit and read a book

Especially one that makes him smile

Hell become so absorbed in its content

And forget where he is, for a while!

He also likes rare books, you know

Which feature Bristol, of old

He has a splendid collection himself

Worth a pretty penny, Im told!

Were glad that hes our neighbour

And that we all get on so well

Some neighbours are a nightmare

Making lives a living hell!

But, oh, not Pete

Hes wonderful! It is so!

Kind, thoughtful and genuine

A true pleasure, yes, to know.

Dolce Gabbana Perfumes - How They Made An Impact In My Life

Dolce Gabbana perfumes changed my life entirely. When I look back in the past, I get to thinking that none of the good things I am enjoying right now would've been possible without the D&G. Let me tell you my life story to better understand my success in life.

I used to be the kind of woman who never had that self-confidence. This lack of self-esteem was brought about by the pains of growing up with five other siblings, me being the middle child. I admit that I lacked the attention in our family. Whenever I make a scene to get as much attention as I can, I always ended up being blamed. As I was growing up, going to school and everything, I didn't belong to the popular group. I was just an average kid, constantly being nudged and pushed by the popular girls. Some boys even made fun of my glasses and they would usually grab it and hide it somewhere. These pains of growing up made me envy most of the rich kids who can buy anything they wanted and those popular ones who can get away with anything.

I never thought my boring life would change. The quick turn around of my destiny began when my only godmother, whom I've never met while I was growing up, came back from Italy, where she stayed for almost two decades. I just came home from my part-time job as a library assistant when my parents introduced her to me. We had a long chat wherein she asked about my goals, dreams, and my plans after high school.

Then she opened her bag and presented me with a "By" by Dolce and Gabbana for women perfume. I looked at it blankly at first, not knowing that it was a designer perfume. After giving me the precious gift, she told me that she will take care of my College expenses. I was awe-struck from what I've heard and couldn't say a word for quite some time. I just couldn't believe my ears! Was I dreaming? No, this was the reality, it's happening right before my eyes.

I only began using my new Dolce Gabbana perfume when I started in College. I was living with my godmother, in her huge mansion. Whenever she travels to Italy, she brings back more of the DG Perfumes. One was "Light Blue" by Dolce and Gabbana for Women. Another was the Dolce Gabbana "The One" for women, a 1.7oz perfume.

For the first time in my life, I began to see the light and I began to build up my self-confidence. Whenever I'm wearing one of the three D&G perfumes, I feel like I can do everything I wish. In College, I draw the guys' attention whenever I pass by the corridors. A lot of them even asked me out on a date. For the first time, I feel like a woman, a deserving one.

My godmother never had to go to Italy to buy me DG perfumes because of a website called Extreme Perfumes. They have been selling fragrances at huge discounts and many affordable shipping rates. My personal favorite section is the Dolce Gabbana perfumes.

My success in life would never be possible without the Dolce Gabbana perfumes. I found out that these fragrances can boost up someone's self-esteem thus improving one's quality of life. Even if I'm a business woman now, I still use my favorite fragrances to give me that invincible power. I recommend every woman should have one to make them be more like me, a successful career woman and a deserving one at that.

You Can Stand Out in a Crowd

Why is it that too few of us try to stand out in a crowd?

Being viewed as knowledgeable in some area in your life can lead to golden opportunities. Have you an ambition to get a promotion? Speak at an event? Impress your spouse or open up your life to possibility?

How do go about doing this? Are you looking at the big picture instead of choosing something specific to become an expert in?

First you must decide what you are good at. What can you talk about with some authority? Is it a hobby? For example: model trains, lace making, children's literature, stamp collecting, matchbox collecting, WW2 History. Is it a skill? Carpentry, public speaking, Internet knowledge, cooking, lace making or painting. Is it a work skill? Are you a people person, great bookeeper, creative chef, dedicated teacher or entrepreneur?

We all have skills to share. This will open up our life. It is where we find our passion.Sharing and opening up can be a way to:

  • meet people

  • gain a promotion

  • develop a consultancy

  • develop self esteem

  • improve personal relationships

Claiming you are an expert at something takes courage and belief in yourself. But the opportunities are unlimited when you do. We live in the information age and people are looking for information on all sorts of topics.

The Internet is a wonderful resource for

  • promoting your ideas,

  • researching

  • contacting people with the same or similar interests.

Really reflect upon what you are good at. Don't be modest. Brainstorm. Ask questions such as: What are my qualifications? Are they formal? Have I gained expertise through experience? This is by no means an inferior qualification!

Are you afraid to claim expertise in an area because you do not want someone to challenge you? Are you sure you know enough?

Look for something unique about your knowledge and experience.

You will probably find it is your attitude and lack of openness that is holding you back. People won't challenge you because most of us are behaving in the same self defeating way. Become someone who can inspire others to break the mold of inferiority.

Spend time reviewing your knowledge and experience and be clear about what you know. A positive approach is to be clear that you are always open to learning more!

Taking a broad topic and then refining it to something specific, unusual or interesting is not difficult if you are willing to put in the time and the effort.

Stand up and put your best foot forward. You don't know where it will lead!

Global Resorts Network - Why I Joined this Home Business Opportunity

Hello and Welcome,

Let me start by sharing with you what I looked for when I searched for information about the home-based business industry. Basically there were four main points I wanted to cover in starting my home business:

1. Product
2. Pay plan
3. Company
4. Team/Leadership (for DSA/Network Marketing opportunities)

I consider these to be important in the decision making process but you may find you need more or less research to be comfortable with your decision. From here I'll get into what I found and why I made the decision I made of joining Global Resorts.

When I fully understood the product, which is a travel membership through GRN that allows members to stay in 4 and 5 star resorts at discounted prices, I knew I would use the product myself. I enjoy traveling and plan to take a lot of vacations in my lifetime so finding a product like Global Resorts Network that would help me save money on my travel expenses was great.

In wanting to make money from home, not only did I want more free time to spend with friends and family, but I wanted to make an above average income. I wanted to grow my income substantially. In order for this to happen a person can't work less hours and make the same wage per hour as your conventional job paid. Global Resorts Network has a pay system that I've never seen before. Not only does it pay well for your efforts alone, $500 or $1000 per sale, but the system is setup in a way that your real success, in the form of staggering income, is truly dependent on helping your team members be successful. In other words my sponsor would be vested in my success.

Global Resorts Network promotes a travel membership that's been in existence for over 20 years which proved to me that the company had a strong history. I did not want worry about my business collapsing because my product disappeared all of sudden. Further research into the travel industry itself proved to me that this was a good market to be in. The travel industry is out pacing the global economy by 23% annually in dollars spent, which means a lot of people travel or want to travel and spend a lot of money doing it.

Being that I happened to be looking into a network marketing type home-business with Global Resorts, I wanted to join with a leader who was knowledgeable, committed, and would be there to help me through my learning curve. If anyone believes there is a system that one can buy into that will automatically start making them money because it takes the "person" out of the equation and "does all" the work for you is in for a rude awakening. I just haven't found that in my experience but I have discovered that you can use auto responders and forms of automation to your advantage. I've used them myself in my business successfully.

In a nutshell, I joined Global Resorts Network because I knew I would use and save money with the travel membership whether I made a single penny or not through GRN's marketing pay plan. That, however, has not been the case and I'm very excited about my Global business for obvious reasons.

Congrats on doing your homework thus far and I hope I've been able to answers a few questions you may have had, but I know you're a savvy consumer so keep doing your research until you are 100% informed and satisfied with your decision.

To your success,

Peter Michael Zienty

The Hobby of Collecting and Operating Model Trains

The hobby of operating and collecting model trains is a growing business. There a so many manufactures out there, the likes include, Lionel, Bachmann, LGB, Marklin, Marx, American Flyer, Aristo-Craft and K-line just name a few. There are also sizes to fit all types of hobby rooms such as, HO Scale, O Scale, OO Scale, S Scale, N Scale, Z Scale and G Scale. Lets not forget the tracks, scenery and transformers that go along with building a layout.

If you are a model train hobbyist then you likely fall into one of five basic types of train people. Although the general public tends to lump them all into one category, it's best to keep the types separated and sharply defined. There may be some who bridge and others who cross over, but the types remain essentially different.

The first group are the Railfans. These are the people who love trains, I'm talking the big ones. The trains that run through your town, hauling passengers and goods. These are the people who ride the trains, or spend hours at the yards talking up the conductors, asking questions or sharing their stories with the railroad employees. They know the ins and outs of every engine that's come through their town, know what the term "High Iron," means and have patches for every line insignia. Being a railfan is a basic prerequisite for entry into the other four train people categories. Without this experience it would be difficult to maintain an interest in creating, building, operating, controlling or even owning a collection of miniature trains.

Scale model railroaders is the second group. Their hobby requires a great amount of patience, skill, and time. Many scale model railroads become life long projects. They are mostly hand-crafted, exact-scale, highly detailed miniaturizations of the real world, with a railroading as a central focus. Some are patterned after real railroads and locales. Others are period pieces that recreate scenes and environments in railroad history. Toy train manufacturers produced items targeted to the scale modelers in the years right before World War II and by the end of the 1930s, scale model railroaders had many choices.

By the time World War II ended a shift towards smaller trains was emphasized. HO became the reigning scale, not only because of advances in technology, but for the practical reason that postwar houses were smaller. A rift between the scale model railroaders and toy train enthusiasts widened and eventually split. Scale model railroaders became their own distinct classification of train people.

The third group are called hi-railers. The term was coined in the 1940s for those operators who built layouts that combined elements of both scale and toy railroading. By this time, the trains had a more realistic appearance, with better detail and proportion. They were appealing to those hobbyists who didn't have the time or skills needed to build the trains yet wanted to enjoy having a model railroad.

The fourth and fifth group are the collectors and investors. By the time the 1950s rolled around companies like Lionel and Gilbert/American Flyers were producing products with new road names and paint schemes each year in hopes of getting repeat business. The practice worked, what they didn't realize at the time was that they were creating future collectibles and opening up a new dimension to the train hobby. However the full impact would not be felt for another 15 to 20 years. By the 1960s the toy train industry went down the drain. Kids wanted other kinds of toys and by the end of the decade, several manufacturers had gone out of business.

During the 1970s and '80s interest in the toy trains came back strong due to superior advertising and a nationwide nostalgia craze. The emphasis on toy trains was different. The trains were viewed as nostalgic adult collectables and investments. Two new groups of train people emerged; toy train collectors and toy train investors. Both were categorized as affluent adults who lacked the time or skills to become hi-railers or scale model railroaders. Some collectors built operating layouts, but most just set up pleasing displays of their trains and accessories, using track plans from old catalogs or magazines. Many built shelves or cases to show off their collectables.

Now days toy trains have come of age. They are a respected part of American culture and many books and magazines have been published about them. The trains now days are better, more scale-like with state of the art technology and attention to detail.

So, what group do you fail into?
